E-Voting Raises Privacy Issues

08.21.07 | No Comments

If you’re curious who voted for which candidate, now you have a way to look that data up - at least in Ohio.

According to CNet,  e-voting machines made by Election Systems and Software time stamp their paper trails. Those paper trails along with voter sign-in records are publically available to anyone who asks - so if you want to know who voted which way, simply compare time stamps with voter sign-ins.

Sounds like a massive breach of privacy - and a blessing for the major political parties who can gather that data and send highly targeted marketing messages to recipients.  I wonder if we can expect a class action suit in the next few days…
