Coupons.com Sues User for DMCA Violation

08.21.07 | No Comments

Can computer owners be prohibited from deleting files from their own computer? That’s the issue at stake in a new DMCA lawsuit. Coupons.com requires consumers to install proprietary software to print out a limited number of free coupons. John Stottlemire realized that you could easily remove that limitation by deleting a few files from your computer. He then posted a tutorial online explaining how others could too. So Coupons.com sued him. Stottlemire says

“All I did was erase files or registry keys,” he says. “Nothing was hacked. Nothing was decoded that was any way, shape or form in the way the DMCA was written.”
