ProBlogger gives some advice for people like Robert Scoble who have been thrust into the public limelight because of their blogs and are now re-evaluating where to go next. In it, Darren Rowse summarizes 5 lessons for anyone dreaming of making it “big”.
- Blogging has rewards - but also Costs
- Sometimes you need to take a step back from your blog to get perspective
- Don’t react too quickly
- We Set the Tone for Others to Follow
- Build Boundaries into Your Blogging
All of it is good advice, but I really like what he says about setting both work/life and content boundaries. Yes, blogging can be addictive and can take up a ton of time - but if you’re stealing time from your family and friends to stay home and blog, perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate your priorities.
I also think that everyone should set up content boundaries. Personal blogs are fine, but if they’re detailing where you are at every second of every day or delving into the inner secrets of your family and friends, you may be setting up an explosive situation. I tend to blog about where I’ve been as opposed to my upcoming plans - that feels a lot “safer” to me - and honestly, I can’t imagine being as public about my life as Robert Scoble is. You should really consider how public you want your life to be before you start blogging.
