How To Build a Friend Base with Social Networks

08.14.07 | No Comments

Chris Winfield writes about how to win more friends in the social network environment. He advises that people check out other users’ profiles, explains the basic netiquette for requesting a Digg/Netscape/Reddit/Stumble, and suggests ways to network online and off to meet high profile users.

I like his focus on actually knowing (chatting with them via IM or meeting up with them at conferences) the people you befriend online rather than randomly asking complete strangers to be your friend.

Here are his main tips - see his post for commentary.

  • check out their profiles
  • use internal messaging systems
  • get people to notice you before you contact them
  • talk to them over IM
  • don’t beg for link love
  • hang out where they are on and offline
  • submit their stories and promote them
  • network - with colleagues, friends, family and employees
