Alexa has been hyped as the way to compare website traffic between sites, but as Michael Arrington points out, it’s far from accurate. Here’s why you should use Compete.com over Alexa.com for a more reliable traffic picture.

I’ve never been a huge fan of Alexa. For whatever reason, they tend to either over or under exaggerate my sites’ traffic. I have one site that gets twice as many visitors/month as another, yet the lower traffic site has an Alexa rank that’s about half the other. (Like 150,000 to 300,000 - the lower the number, the better) To counter that, I’ve installed the Alexa toolbar and am visiting my pages regularly.
