RSS-to-Wordpress Aggregator

08.13.07 | No Comments

After reviewing a number of StumbleUpon pages, I decided I wanted to syndicate the content onto my own web host, since personally, I like control over the content I create (ie having a backup of my database, using titles I want to use, and not using “no follow” tags). So today, I’ve set up a Wordpress plugin that should more or less aggregate the content from StumbleUpon.

I decided to go with the Auto RSS Importer since that was the first one I found to actually import an RSS feed into WordPress as separate posts. Apparently there is also FeedWordPress, but I tried to access the page all day and couldn’t. Regardless, Auto RSS Importer is doing what I need it to do.

The nice thing about this plugin is that it allows me to import posts into WordPress as a draft post which I can then go in and alter - such as changing the title, putting it in the appropriate category, and altering some of the text (quoting, adding an image or affiliate link, etc).

While the process still isn’t 100% automatic, it’s better than copying and pasting a bunch of reviews. I did have to burn the StumbleUpon feed via Feedburner and change it to RSS 1.0 to get it to work. And I haven’t yet figured out how to get WordPress to recognize the main links, so I’ve been copying and pasting those from the StumbleUpon entries.
